Extramarital sex fuels earthquakes: Senior Iran cleric
Apr 17, 2010  TEHRAN  Laughing
A senior Iranian cleric has claimed that dolled-up women incite extramarital sex, causing more earthquakes in Iran, a country that straddles several fault lines, newspapers reported on Saturday.
"Many women who dress inappropriately ... cause youths to go astray, taint their chastity and incite extramarital sex in society, which increases earthquakes," Ayatollah Kazem Sedighi told worshippers at Tehran Friday prayer.
"Calamities are the result of people's deeds," he was quoted as saying by reformist Aftab-e Yazd newspaper. "We have no way but conform to Islam to ward off dangers."
The Islamic dress code is mandatory in Iran, which has been under clerical rule for more than three decades.
Every post-pubescent woman regardless of her religion or nationality must cover her hair and bodily contours in public. Offenders face punishment and fine.
But this has not stopped urban women from appearing in the streets wearing tight coats and flimsy headscarves and layers of skillfully applied makeup.
Iran is prone to frequent quakes, many of which have been devastating.
The worst in recent times hit the southern city of Bam in December 2003, killing 31,000 people -- about a quarter of the population -- and destroying its ancient mud-built citadel.

Quakes hit northeast Iran injure 170
July  30 - 31, 2010
A 5.7 magnitude earthquake hits northeastern Iran, 170 injured.
It damaged villages and disrupted communications.
Efforts are under way to recover people trapped under debris, while most of the injured were treated without being hospitalised.
Many people spent the night outdoors in the city's parks fearing aftershocks.
22 needed hospital treatment, no deaths were reported.
Earthquakes are common in Iran. In 2003 about 30,000 people were killed in a quake that devastated the southeastern city of Bam.

Unusual Swarm of 40++ Earthquakes in Strait of Hurmuz (Gulf of Aden) Yemen May Mean Trouble
There has been a tremendous number of earthquakes that began early during 14-Nov, 0630 UTC, and are ongoing at this moment.
More than 30 moderate earthquakes ranging from magnitude 4.5 to 5.4 have rattled under the sea where the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea meet at a point off of Yemen.
The depths have been mostly around 10 km, with a few deeper.

A closer look reveals something that appears highly unusual. That is, so far at least 20 of the earthquakes have been at a depth of exactly 10.0 km. I mean, exactly. What are the odds of that, spread across the affected region?
This earthquake swarm is occurring right now, and is happening right in the middle of major oil and freight transit sea lanes, the busiest in the world.

Multiple earthquakes off Yemen coast
Nov. 15, 2010    SANAA, Nov. 14
A flurry of earthquakes, up to 5.0 magnitude, were reported off the coast of Yemen, Djibouti and Eritrea on Sunday, according to seismologists.

The first quake was reported at 07:34 AM, 120km north east of the Djibouti coast on Sunday morning.
An unusual series of aftershocks followed including a 4.5 magnitude quake in an unpopulated area of Lahij governorate, according to The Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System.
In total up to 17 quakes were registered off the cost of Yemen by the United States Geological Survey.  According to the US government’s scientific agency depths ranged from 9.9 km to 13.2 km.

The surface of the Earth is broken into six or seven major plates.
The Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden were formed as the Arabian plate separated from Africa, a process, which began 56 to 34 million years ago.
Across both the Gulf of Aden mid-ocean ridge system and the southernmost part of the Red Sea the plates are moving, not only apart but also sliding past each other.
Geologists believe the Red Sea is still widening and in time will become an ocean.
The East African Rift System, the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden form what’s know as the ‘Afar triple junction’ the centre of Sunday’s swarm of earthquakes.

Iran quake toll climbs many buried
December 21, 2010
The death toll from a magnitude-6.5 earthquake in southeastern Iran rose to 7, with officials fearing that it will continue to climb, state-run Press TV said Tuesday.
Felt as far away as the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, the quake was particularly strong between the cities of Zahedan and Bam.
It struck late at night and hardest in mostly rural, relatively sparsely populated areas of Kerman province, officials said.

"Considering the dimensions of the damage, the death toll is expected to rise," the governor general of Kerman was quoted as saying by the IRNA news agency.
Citing eyewitnesses, another state-run news agency IRNA reported that scores of people are trapped in debris of buildings that have been destroyed. Many such sites are in hard-to-reach locations, making any rescue operations even more difficult.

Additionally, at least 7 aftershocks struck in the four hours since the 6.5-magnitude quake hit at 10:12 p.m. Monday night, according to the Iranian Seismological Center, based at the University of Tehran, and the U.S. Geological Survey.

Javad Kamali, a deputy governor for Kerman province, told the IRNA that the tremor knocked down phone lines throughout the region. Military and law enforcement workers could communicate only using wireless technology, he added.

Iran earthquakes kill 153 people in the northwest
8/11/12 - Two strong earthquakes struck northwest Iran on Saturday, killing 153 people and injuring more than 1,300 as buildings were reduced to rubble, Iranian officials said.
Thousands fled their homes and remained outdoors as at least 20 aftershocks hit the area.
Casualty numbers could well rise, Iranian officials feared, as some of the injured are in a critical condition, others are still trapped under the rubble and rescuers have yet to reach some of the affected villages.
Iran is straddled by major fault lines and has suffered several devastating earthquakes in recent years, including a 6.6 magnitude quake in 2003 which turned the southeastern historic city of Bam into dust and killed more than 25,000 people.

Any quake over 6.0 is a bad one in many nations.

Iran quakes kill 300 and injure 2,600
Overcrowded hospitals in northwest Iran struggled to cope with thousands of earthquake victims on Sunday and rescuers raced to reach remote villages after two powerful quakes killed nearly 300 people.
Thousands huddled in makeshift camps or slept in the street after Saturday's quakes in fear of more aftershocks, 60 of which had already struck. A lack of tents and other supplies left them exposed to the night chill, one witness told Reuters.
Some peoples home was destroyed, and all their livestock killed

Ahmadinejad criticized for leaving Iran soon after quake, as death toll hits 306
August 13, 2012
Ahmadinejad is visiting Saudi Arabia for a meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, which is expected to deal with the crisis in Syria.
The decision to leave Iran less than two days after the quakes is criticized.

Shallow 6.3 magnitude earthquake strikes southern Iran, near nuclear plant, 4 dead
Fars news agency says fearful residents poured into the streets. The quake was felt across the Gulf in Bahrain and Qatar, where workers were evacuated from high-rise buildings as a precaution. Earlier on Sunday a lighter earthquake jolted Khormooj. Iran is located on seismic faults and it experiences daily light earthquakes. In 2003, some 26,000 people were killed by a 6.6 magnitude quake that flattened the historic southeastern city of Bam.
