I am calling this RED ALERT on my own -
extrapolated from Jon's post.  I have edited Jon.

Update on Bardarbunga and Askja volcanoes
August 28
, 2014 by Jon Frimann
Harmonic tremor remains high on all SIL stations around Bardarbunga.
The situation is extremely dynamic and is going to change fast in next 24 to 48 hours.
I am now close to 80% sure that an eruption is going to take place in both Askja and Bardarbunga volcanoes
,
since minor eruptions have been taking place under the glacier already.

This is the first time this has happened in Iceland since modern recording started.

If you are in the area DO NOT go into the closed area.
Eruption might start at any time without warning, it will kill you.
In such glacier flood it is not just mud, volcano material, but also an ice bergs that are larger than 5 floor houses.
This eruption is going to big.

Askja volcano
The Bardarbunga dyke has entered Askja volcano.
Askja volcano status has been elevated to Yellow.

Bardarbunga volcano

Cauldrons in Vatnajokull glacier that is on top of Bardarbunga volcano have not grown during the night.
The water seems to be flowing into Grimsvotn (Grimsfjall volcano) lake. It has risen close to 15 meters in the past few days.
Earthquake activity is high.
5.4 earthquake in the main volcano today (28-August-2014).
Over 1300 earthquakes happened yesterday in the north end of the dyke swarm.

Cracks have started to happen in the crust above the dyke.
This means the dyke is getting wider and is higher up in the crust then suggested by earthquake activity.
There are reports of small cauldrons in Dyngjujokull glacier in the area, in the place were the glacier is thinnest and ending.

Askja and Bárðarbunga volcanoes at 22:21 UTC
August 29, 2014
by Jón Frímann
Today there has been minor “quiet” time in Bárðrabunga. Harmonic tremor has been stable and no cycle of up and down has taken place. In my view that might change in next hours. I am already seeing changes in the tremor plot that suggest this.
The situation is highly dynamic and is going to change rapidly at times.

Eruption has started on the fissure swarm
August 29, 2014 by Jón Frímann - early in the day in Iceland
Eruption has started in the dyke area. The eruption appears clearly on Míla web camera. It can be viewed here.

Iceland volcano triggers red alert
Iceland raised its aviation warning level near the Bardarbunga volcano to red after an eruption began overnight.
Scientists said a fissure eruption 1km (0.6 miles) long started in a lava field north of the Vatnajokull glacier.

Civil protection officials said Icelandic Air Traffic Control had closed the airspace above the eruption up to a height of 5,000ft (1,500m).
The volcano has been hit by several recent tremors.

The fissure eruption took place between Dyngjujokull Glacier and the Askja caldera, a statement from the Department of Civil Protection said.
"Scientists who have been at work close to the eruption monitor the event at a safe distance," the statement added.
It said that no volcanic ash had so far been detected but a coast guard aircraft was due to take off later to survey the site.

Many earthquakes.  A 2nd fissure opened up as I watched.

Bardarbunga cam 2 and cam is shaking like crazy! Beautiful lava fountains!
Its so beautiful! I watched LIVE! I am amazed and thrilled. WOW!
Great beauty can cause major problems, not only in Iceland.
This fire and magma is coming out of an ice glacier and melting it. I am in AWE.
I cant get over this! Live cam op zooms in close to the lave fountains sometimes.

Fissure eruption in Holuhraun (north of Vatnajokull).
A strong gale in most parts with strong gusts near mountains.
Bardarbunga  =  RED - Eruption is imminent or in progress - significant emission of ash into atmosphere likely.

Iceland volcano prompts highest aviation warning
August 31, 2014  New fissure eruption

A small new fissure eruption in an ice-free area of Iceland's Bardarbunga volcano system prompted authorities to raise their warning of the risk of ash to aviation to the highest level on Sunday.

Bardarbunga volcano
August 31, 2014
at 17:49 UTC by Jón Frímann
Vatnajokull glacier eruption
Bardarbunga volcano has several fissures and glaciers I guess.

North end of the eruption fissure is in an area were no eruption has happened before.
The eruption started around 03:00 – 04:45 UTC.

Largest earthquake today was magnitude 5,1 in Northeast Bardarbunga caldera.
There is now an high risk of eruption in the Bardarbunga volcano caldera.

The eruption fissure is now around 2 km long. It is on the glacier free area.
The eruption fissure is the same one that erupted on 29-August-2014.

There is a high risk of new fissures opening up without warning in this area and under the glacier.
There are currently no signs of the eruption stopping at the moment.
The lava is now covering around 3 to 5 square km of area. This is just a desert area and nothing is at risk. It is running over the lava field that was created in the eruption of 1797.
There is currently no risk of any volcano ash.
There is now more power in the eruption at 15:25 UTC.

Bardarbunga slowly sinking
Sept 1, 2014  Pall Einarsson
The strongest earthquakes have been detected along rim of the caldera in Bardarbunga, a subglacial volcano.
These strong earthquakes are the consequence of magna streaming out of the chamber beneath the caldera.  The magma chamber is clearly subsiding, thus reacting to the considerable amount of magma that has been streaming out towards the dike intrusion.  Analysis of these earthquakes supports this conclusion, as well as nearby GPS measurements of land deformation. We call this pressure changes in the roof of the magma chamber; in effect, the top of the volcano is sinking ever so slightly.

Slabby Pahoehoe lava - and lots of it
Sept 2, 2014
The lava flowing from the fissure north of Vatnajokull is classified as Pahoehoe lava - a type of basaltic lava that is very common in eruptions in Iceland. The term comes from Hawaii and means smooth unbroken lava. The lava at Holuhraun is so thin however, that it forms slabs on the surface.  Considerable amount of sulphuric gas rises from the lava, making it essential for scientists in the area to have gas detectors and gas masks available.

Continuous lava eruption is under way.  A few hours after the eruption, reports list the airborne ash particles are minimal.
The Aviation Color Code was raised to Code Red then lowered back to Code Orange.

ICELAND  -  Land of fire and ice

September 4, 2014
at 04:25
This whole thing, both the dyke and Bárðarbunga volcano are highly unstable at the moment.
http://www.jonfr.com/volcano/?p=4899

Decrease in volcanic tremor near Holuhraun

Volcanic tremor near the Holuhraun eruption has decreased in the last two hours, evacuation was ordered after a sharp increase in the tremor, leading to fears that a subglacial eruption was imminent. The origin of the tremor is possibly to be found in the bedrock beneath the northern part of Dyngjujokull outlet glacier, or near the margin of the glacier, south of the Holuhraun eruption site.  One possible explanation of the tremor increase is that groundwater had seeped through deep cracks in the bedrod, towards the magma beneath.  About 30 people, mostly scientists, quickly evacuated the area around Holuhraun. Flood warning was issued, as a subglacial eruption was considered a real possibility. They have spent the day at a mountain hut near the Askja volcano, at safe distance.

Seismic activity in the area has decreased somewhat, relative to the intensity in recent days. Most of it has been detected near the magma intrusion. Since midnight, ca. 400 earthquakes have been detected.

Scientists advised to leave Holuhraun
Subglacial eruption is therefore a real possibility, and the only option was to leave immediately.

People have been trying to enter the area in illegal way. This is extremely dangerous. Since an eruption under the glacier might start without warning, there is also risk of quick sand around this area due to all the changes that are now taking place in the crust at Holuhraun lava field.
