Mysterious horned sea monster washes ashore in Spain
August 21, 2013
Remains of odd, unidentified creature stretches 13 feet, leaves officials baffled.
A mysterious sea creature featuring what appear to be horns on its head was discovered in the advanced stages of decomposition along the shoreline of Luis Siret Beach in Villaricos, Spain.
A woman first discovered the head and then found the body farther down the beach. The entire carcass with the head stretched 13 feet.  It really stank.

It’s very decomposed and we cannot identify what it is.
The best guess here is an oarfish.
Toledano did shed some light on the horns of the sea creature, however. He said they are actually bones that have fallen out of place.

Two earthquakes struck southeast Spain in quick succession Wednesday, killing at least 7 people, injuring dozens and causing major damage to buildings.
The epicenter of the magnitudes 4.4 and 5.2 quake was close to the town of Lorca, and the second came about two hours after the first.
The hospital in Lorca was evacuated, dozens of injured people were being treated at the scene and a field hospital was being set up.

7 people were killed Wednesday when an earthquake struck southeastern Spain.

The 5.3-magnitude quake occurred at 4:47 p.m. (10:47 a.m. ET) and was centered about 50 kilometers (31 miles) southwest of Murcia, near the Mediterranean coast.
That is about 218 miles south-southeast of Madrid.
It was preceded at 3:05 p.m. by a 4.5-magnitude temblor centered in the same area.
At least one of the deaths occurred in a building collapse in the town of Lorca

2 earthquakes in Spain
May 11, 2011
Two earthquakes struck southeast Spain in quick succession, killing at least 10 people, injuring dozens and causing major damage to buildings.  It was the highest quake-related death toll in Spain in more than 50 years.

The epicenter of the quakes — with magnitudes of 4.4 and 5.2 — was close to the town of Lorca, and the second came about two hours after the first, an official with the Murcia regional government said on condition of anonymity in line with department policy.

Dozens of injured people were being treated at the scene and a field hospital was set up in the town of about 85,000 people, officials said. About 270 patients at a hospital in Lorca were being evacuated by ambulance as a precaution after the building sustained minor damage, the Murcia regional government said.

The Spanish prime minister's office put the death toll at 10 and the Murcia administration said the deaths included a minor and occurred with the second, stronger quake.

Large chunks of stone and brick fell from the facade of a church in Lorca as a reporter for Spanish state TV was broadcasting live from the scene. A large church bell was also among the rubble, which missed striking the reporter, who appeared to be about 30 feet (9 meters) away when it fell. The broadcaster reported that schoolchildren usually gather at that spot around that time, and if it had happened 10 minutes later, a "tragedy" could have occurred.

Spanish TV showed images of cars that were partially crushed by falling rubble, and large cracks in buildings. Nervous groups of residents gathered in open public places, talking about what happened and calling relatives and friends on their cell phones. An elderly woman appeared to be in shock and was seated in a chair as people tried to calm her.

Residents -
- I felt a tremendously strong movement, followed by a lot of noise, and I was really frightened.
- house split open with the quake and "all the furniture fell over," according to El Pais.

Many residents decided to spend the night camped out in parks and other open spaces, fearing aftershocks and because of structural damage to their homes, according to state TV footage.

This was the deadliest quake in Spain since 1956, when 12 people died and some 70 were injured in a quake in the southern Granada region, according to the National Geographic Institute. It says Spain has about 2,500 quakes a year, but only a handful are actually noticed by people. Spain's south and southeast are the most earthquake-prone regions.

The U.S. Geological Survey's National Earthquake Information Center in Golden, Colorado, had slightly different magnitudes for the temblors.
John Bellini, a seismologist with the USGS center, said the larger earthquake had a preliminary 5.3 magnitude and struck 220 miles (350 kilometers) south-southeast of Madrid at 6:47 p.m. (1647 GMT, 12:47 p.m. EDT).

The quake was about 6 miles (10 kilometers) deep, and was preceded by the smaller one with a 4.5 magnitude in the same spot, Bellini said. He classified the bigger quake as moderate and said it could cause structural damage to older buildings and masonry.
Lorca has a mix of buildings that are vulnerable to earthquakes and quake-resistant, according to the USGS.
The USGS said it has recorded hundreds of small quakes in the area since 1990.

Cause of Destruction in Spain earthquake hot zone
Spain is a relatively low risk country for quakes, and buildings are not generally constructed to protect against seismic shaking.  This event was particularly damaging because it occurred at a shallow depth.

January 20, 2012
– BECHAR, Algeria - Snow fell Tuesday in the Sahara Desert in western Algeria. A 24-hour cold spell brought snow and rain to the region. Strong wind blew the snow across roads and buildings in the province of Bechar. Meteorologists predicted a return of good weather Wednesday. People who live in the region said the snow was good for the palm trees because it killed parasites. Bechar is located in the northern Sahara, about 36 miles south of the Moroccan border.

Wildfires break out in Spain, Portugal; 1,350 evacuated
07 Jul 2015
— More than 1,350 residents were evacuated in Spain's northeastern region of Aragon as a wildfire spread through a pine forest amid a lingering heat wave, a local official said Sunday.

Five villages were evacuated as flames devoured hills that are 375 kilometers (230 miles) northeast of Madrid, said Javier Lamban, the president of Aragon. The evacuees, who included residents of a retirement home, were transferred to nearby towns.

About 500 firefighters and almost 100 pieces of equipment, including aircraft, were fighting the flames Sunday, which were being fanned by windy conditions and were creating a large plume of smoke.

The fire, which broke out Saturday afternoon, has already burned close to 8,000 hectares (19,770 acres) of forest in a remote area, according to Ministry of Agriculture and Environment spokesman Modesto Lobon.

Also, the fire department in the northeastern region of Catalonia said it was combating a wildfire that had broken out in Cardedeu, 40 kilometers (25 miles) north of Barcelona, and had destroyed two houses and several cars, although no one was injured.

Weather stations across Spain had warned people on June 27 to take extra precautions as a heat wave that was due to engulf much of the country for an extended period of time increased the risk of wildfires.

Spain's meteorological agency predicts that hot weather across the Iberian Peninsula, with temperatures reaching 40 C (104 F), will last another week.
In Portugal, the National Civil Protection Authority said almost 100 firefighters were tackling a wildfire that broke out Saturday night in the forests of Alcobertas, north of Lisbon.

Wildfires rage across northern Spain
Dec 29, 2015
-  Aircraft help douse dozens of wildfires in northern Spain.
This is unusual in regions of the Bay of Biscay, normally rainy, especially in winter.
More than 80 fires are burning across the lush Cantabria region.
Most of the blazes had been caused by delinquents.  (or Muslim 'refugees')
