Israel exporting  gas to Europe
April  7, 2016
-  At least 15 gas companies plan to set up a consortium to export natural gas from Israel's offshore fields to Europe via Turkey.  Possibly as soon as 2021.  The project would require agreements to resolve any longstanding issues between Turkey, Greece, Cyprus and Israel.  GOOD LUCK WIDDAT!  Turkey plans to diversify its sources and acquire gas from Israel.

Natural gas production vital for Israel
April  7, 2016
 -  At energy conference in Tel Aviv Yuval Steinitz criticizes recent High Court of Justice ruling on natural gas framework, vows to find solution.  Natural gas production is vital to Israel's security and economy, U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz said.

Steinitz criticized the ruling that struck down the stability clause of the natural gas framework. Steinitz described the ruling, which gave the Knesset a year to amend the framework or it will be canceled, an irresponsible mistake. There are several ways of doing it, whether through guarantees for the gas companies or the financing banks, a safety net, or by refining the stability clause.

On Monday, Moniz and Steinitz signed an amendment to an existing energy agreement between the U.S. and Israel that will bolster cooperation between the two countries.  The U.S. and Israel will continue to foster research and development, drive down the costs of clean energy technologies and encourage collaboration between our nations' top energy scientists.

Russia wants Israeli gas
April  25, 2016
 -  Russia is seeking to enter the Israeli natural gas industry.
Putin wants to take part in the development of the Leviathan gas reservoir.  In February 2013, the Russian national gas company Gazprom signed a memorandum of understanding to buy gas produced from the Tamar reservoir through a floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) facility.  The project was never implemented.

Russia did not give up, however. Gazprom negotiated for months to buy up to 30% of the Leviathan reservoir.  South Korean company Kogas, Chinese company CNOOC, and Australian company Woodside expressed interest also.  Gazprom has apparently submitted the highest bid.

Israeli natural gas deal
May 30, 2016
-  First sale after Israeli natural gas deal passes.
Leviathan gas field to power a southern Israel power plant until 2034.
The US-led consortium leading the development of Israel's offshore gas reserves has announced its first sales deal since a reworked agreement on a key offshore field was given the go-ahead.

Noble Energy announced a $3-billion deal to supply 13 billion cubic meters of natural gas from the Leviathan field to a power plant in southern Israel over the next 18 years.  The Israeli company in the consortium, Delek Drilling hailed the new sales agreement.

It was the second sales deal confirmed by the consortium but the first since the government ratified the offshore development project on May 22, after a legal battle had delayed it.

The entire development project had been shot down by the supreme court as unconstitutional, with critics saying it gave too much power to the energy companies.  After the ruling, the agreement was then revised to reflect the court's objections and the government subsequently gave it the green light.

Leviathan is the largest of Israel's offshore gas fields, with enough gas to turn the previously resource-poor country into a significant exporter.  Key potential markets are Turkey and Egypt.

Israel close to sealing offshore gas deal after compromise
After Supreme Court controversially vetoed the deal, government reaches compromise agreement with Noble Energy and Delek.  Deal to put a major offshore gas field online after a compromise was reached with the US-led consortium of developers.  Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu criticized the court's ruling, warning it could seriously harm the Israeli economy.

Russia relations with Israel are deep
June 8, 2016
 -   Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow
They spoke at a press conference on bilateral relations and about international problems.  The Soviet Union was the first country to recognize Israel as an independent state in 1948.  Putin spoke about plans to increase economic cooperation.  A free trade area between the Eurasian union and Israel will be an incentive for the development of economic relations.

Israeli-Russian war game
June 11, 2016
-  Russian President Vladimir Putin and Israeli PM Benyamin Netanyahu decided to deepen military ties. It was a historic decision that spells the end of the IDF’s unique relationship with the US military.

Putin and Netanyahu decided that a joint exercise by the Israeli and Russian naval and air forces will be held this summer.  The joint war game was tied to an agreement to allow Russian gas companies to compete for contracts to develop Israel’s Leviathan and Tamar offshore gas fields.  Uh oh.

Putin tried to convince Netanyahu by saying that the presence of the Russian navy and air force in the area would guarantee that no Arab or Muslim military force, such as those of Iran, Syria and Hizballah, would attack the gas fields.

In the long term, the combination of Russia’s massive warships and Israel’s smaller and faster vessels built for rapid response to any attack along its coast, may provide an effective defense of energy assets in the Mediterranean basin, especially in the region of Cyprus, Greece, Turkey and Israel.  These assets would include shipping routes, drilling platforms, gas pipelines and undersea optic cables, among others.

Alongside the advantages, cooperation with a world military power like Russia holds operational, intelligence, tactical and strategic risks.  This may result in mutual exposure of some of their military secrets.

Israeli Gas market dries up
Oct 5, 2016
-  PM Binyamin Netanyahu has been forced to give up plan to pipe gas from Israel’s offshore fields to Turkey for sale in European markets after France and Germany intimated that dealings with Ankara were unacceptable.  Plans to expand the Leviathan gas well have also been put on ice.

Although the search goes on for alternative buyers, the main export markets in Europe for Israel gas, barring the smaller markets of Egypt, Jordan and the Palestinian Authority, have suddenly dried up.  This is misfortune for the Israeli economy.

Europe today refuses to have any truck with Turkey and Erdogan in the light of his 2016 behavior.  Turkey allowed Muslim terrorists into Europe, his persecution of the Kurds, his détente with Moscow and, finally Turkey’s alienation from NATO.  France and Germany will not buy Israel gas piped through Turkey.

Jordan NEPCO signed a contract for the purchase of natural gas from Leviathan over 15 years.  There are still conditions attached.

Cyprus has its problems with Turkey so there are glitches there.
Egypt gas sales have their own problems.
Investors are keeping their distance.
