4.0-magnitude earthquake centered in Rancho Palos Verdes jolts South Bay

A magnitude-4.0 earthquake rattled portions of the South Bay today, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The quake, which was originally reported with a magnitude of 3.9 but was quickly upgraded, struck at 1 p.m. six miles south of Rancho Palos Verdes and seven miles southwest of San Pedro, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

It was the latest in a series of temblors that have hit the Southland in recent weeks. Three quakes have struck in the Marina del Rey area -- a magnitude-3.0 on Thursday afternoon, a magnitude-2.8 around 8 p.m. April 28 and a magnitude-3.2 quake around 8 p.m. April 26.

Seismologist Warns More Earthquakes Coming To SoCal
29 Apr 2013
— A pair of minor earthquakes that rattled the Westside over the weekend are more common than one may think,  but that doesn’t mean residents shouldn’t be prepared, a seismologist said Monday
The two quakes were both centered about two miles north of El Segundo, with one on Friday registering magnitude-3.2 and a second, less powerful magnitude-2.8 temblor striking the area on Sunday.
No injuries or damages were reported after either incident.

Dr. Lucy Jones of Cal Tech and the U.S. Geological Survey told KNX 1070 NEWSRADIO these types of swarms are not exactly a rare occurrence.
“A magnitude-3 happens somewhere in Southern California a couple times a week,” Jones said. “This one just happened to be near a lot of people ’cause it was near LAX.”
According to Jones, the Los Angeles basin had experienced multiple magnitude-3 quakes and at least one damaging earthquake every year for seven years before the catastrophic 1994 quake in Northridge.

However, Jones did caution that the recent absence of a major quake in the Southland does raise some concerns.
“We do need to remember that the last 20 years has been a particularly quiet time in the history of Southern California,” she said. “The present quiet is not the long-term normal, and people do need to know that a some point, we’re going to be having more earthquakes than we’ve had recently.”
A USGS event map shows Friday’s quake was felt as far north as La Cañada Flintridge and as far south as Huntington Beach.

Strong quake shakes buildings in Mexico City
21 Aug 2013
A magnitude-6.1 earthquake rattled Mexico City on Wednesday, the United States Geological Survey said.
The epicenter was in the southern state of Guerrero, just northwest of Ayulta de los Libres, but buildings shook in the capital some 166 miles away.
There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties following the temblor, which was recorded at a depth of 21 miles.

Scientist Claims Devastating Earthquake Will Hit Mexico City Before 2014
Aug 26, 2013
A Mexico City-based seismologist has predicted an earthquake of devastating magnitude in that city that could potentially occur before December.
According to Mexican Engineer Gabriel Curiel Flores, an earthquake of at least 8 points in the Richter scale is slated to occur before year's end.
Theory Of Gravitational Forces." According to Flores, the theory helped him accurately predict the earthquake that shook Japan in March.
The theory, which has yet to be peer reviewed and approved by other members of the scientific community, states that earthquakes and other tectonic movements are in fact events that can be predicted and prepared for before they actually occur. Longstanding scientific consensus is that earthquakes are complex events that stem from a number of variable occurrences along earth's tectonic plates and therefore are too complex to predict accurately.
Flores' website has gone viral in Mexico.

6.5 earthquake Gulf of California-Baja
October 19, 2013
–  A moderate 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck off the western coast of Mexico, 90 kilometers southwest of Huatabampo in Sonora state.
The epicenter of the quake was 10 kilometers deep in the Gulf of California.  The quake was initially 6.8, but downgraded to 6.5 by USGS. On August 21, two strong 6.0 magnitude quakes hit central and southern Mexico, causing extensive damage. One of the earthquakes affected Mexico City and Acapulco.

Salton Sea California
March 16, 2014  The Life and Death of the Salton Sea

A trench experiment at the Salton Sea which could trigger a spasm resulting in the cataclysmic Big One.
During the 1950s this artificial lake became a desert oasis.
Today the Salton Sea is a skeleton.

The Salton Sea was accidentally created in 1905 when an irrigation canal burst diverting the Colorado River into the Salton Basin.
Later it became an ecological nightmare.
Mud oozes up from the depths forming mud volcanoes, geothermal vents, small geysers and hot pools.

The United States and Mexico signed a treaty that brought Mexico raw sewage to the inland lake creating a cesspool.
The new river into the Salton Sea seethes with pathogens such as tuberculosis, encephalitis, polio, cholera, hepatitis, and thyroid.  Swirling in the murky waters are dead animals, garbage, high fecal colonies, contaminants, volatile organic compounds, heavy metals, pesticides, agricultural runoff, uranium, mercury, and lithium which may be extracted from the sea to the tune of billions in profit for private industry.

Earthquake Swarm Salton Sea, California
May 21, 2015
-  A noteworthy 4.2M earthquake and subsequent seismic swarm has struck Southern California at the active volcanic buttes of the Salton Sea Volcano.
These series of volcanic buttes around Salton Sea are prone for eruption.

This South California earthquake follows an oil pipeline rupture near Los Angeles, and a series of earthquakes at dormant volcanoes up the West Coast.  Dormant volcanoes such as Mount Hood, Glacier Peak, Two Sisters, Mammoth Mountain, Bitner Butte, and Salton Sea all have shown movement over the past 2 weeks.

This new Salton Sea Volcanic earthquake swarm is on TOP of the new eruption occurring off the West Coast of Oregon (along the Axial seamount).
A giant steam plume May 20 is also noteworthy.

California, Nevada Quake swarm
May 27, 2015
-  Quake swarm over the past 24 hours at multiple dormant volcanoes in California, and Nevada.
Northern California seismic activity very close to Mount Lassen volcano, with a M3.0 earthquake striking next to a chain of smaller nearby volcanic buttes.

Further South in California, just across the border in Baja Mexico (Gulf of California), another series of dormant buttes showed seismic activity in the same few hours time.

Just like the volcanoes in Northern California, these smaller buttes are part of a greater volcanic complex.  There is an old super-volcano located in Baja Mexico.

There were earthquakes at the dormant volcanoes in both California and near Las Vegas, Nevada.
This seismic unrest is related to greater movement in the region, and is a sign of something to watch as a gauge for larger earthquake unrest to possibly come in the near term.

Old dormant volcanoes earthquakes in Nevada
May 27, 2015 -  Pressure is building in the Southwest United States
Over the past week a 5.4 magnitude earthquake struck a dormant volcanic butte near Las Vegas Nevada.
May 26 had an earthquake swarm there.  Several long dormant volcanic buttes in the area of the epicenter.

The rocks atop these small buttes indicate an eruptive past.
The location of the larger 5.4M earthquake appears to be 2 old undersea volcanoes less than a mile away.

These dormant volcanic buttes can be seen across the landscape.
They are showing movement after several other dormant volcanoes saw activity along the West coast over the past week (including Mount Hood, Glacier Peak, Mammoth Mountain, Mono Lake, + Salton Sea).

Three different 3.0M+ earthquakes have struck in the past hour since originally posting this at 940pm CDT May 26, 2015

Baja quake swarms
May 28, 2015
-  More earthquake swarms near the dormant Cerro Prieto volcano butte in South California / North Mexico along the Mexicali border region.  TWO dormant volcanoes in Baja Mexico struck within 24 hours.  This dormant volcanic movement in Baja California follows other activity in other dormant volcanoes up the West coast over the past few days.  Noteworthy earthquake activity occurred May 27 in Northern and Southern California near volcanic locations.

Sept 13, 2015 -  6.6  earthquake Mexico. Gulf of California

Salton Sea active
Nov 26, 2015
-  Earthquake swarm strikes West Coast VOLCANOES, Glacier Peak, Washingotn and Salton Sea, California.  An earthquake swarm struck on the flanks of Glacier Peak volcano in Washington State, and at Salton Sea Volcanic Buttes in Southern California.  2 quake of M3.5 and M3.1 struck Glacier Peak Volcano.  One M3.0 struck Salton Sea Volcanic buttes.  Both locations which were struck reside along the West coast of the United States.

Salton Sea is another volcano which shows seismic activity BEFORE we see larger West coast earthquakes strike.  This volcano in Southern California was recently elevated to active status, and even sent of Geothermal plumes.

California San Andreas fault
Oct 1, 2016
-  Risk of big earthquake on San Andreas fault rises after quake swarm at Salton Sea.  Rumblings deep under the Salton Sea. A rapid succession of small earthquakes, 3 over magnitude 4.0, began rupturing near Bombay Beach, continuing for more than 24 hours. Before the swarm started to fade, 200 earthquakes had been recorded.

The quakes hit in a seismic zone south of the San Andreas fault end. It could wake up the nearby San Andreas.  The swarm increased the likelihood of a major quake in Southern California.

Salton Sea Quake Cluster Increased Probability of Major Quake on San Andreas Fault

This is no joke, its a high liklihood - but when unknown
You might be more concerned with a huge earthquake caused by a failure of the Cascadia plate, followed by a 100- foot high tsunami.
