Mali, West AFRIKA
170 hostages in Radisson Hotel attack
Nov 20, 2015 -  Muslim terrorists
opened fire on a hotel Bamako, the capital of Mali, taking 170 people hostage.  Jihadists launch Mumbai style assault with automatic weapons on Radisson Blu Hotel in capital frequented by Western officials, 3 dead so far.

The masked terrorists arrived in car with a diplomatic licence plate.
The terrorists entered the hotel shouting - Allahu akbar.
They have locked in about 140 guests and about 30 employees, so the hotel is locked down by the hostage-takers, not by police, and there is no possibility to go out or come in.

Jihadists are on the 7th floor, firing in the corridor.
Security forces have set up a cordon around the building.
Among the kidnapped was a Chinese tourist who told Xinhua by cell phone that he was one of several other Chinese nationals being held hostage.

Among the hostages are US, French including French military, Air France employees, Chinese citizens, and Turks.  Aliko Dangote, Africaís richest man, has been staying at the Radisson Blu in Bamako.
The Radisson Blu hotel is considered a major local hub for expats and tourists.

Mali's capital was also targeted back in 2015 May, when a restaurant was attacked and 4 people were murdered.  13 people killed by jihadist terrorists in central Mali in August.

Some hostages, including those able to recite verses of the Koran, are being freed.

AFRICA
Nigeria gas
fire kills 100+
Dec 25, 2015
 -  A gas tanker truck has ignited an inferno at a crowded industrial gas plant in Nigeria on Christmas Eve, killing  100 people.   The fire raged for 5 hours in Nnewi, a predominantly Christian community in southeast Nigeria.

Staff inside the plant were reported to have been trapped.
The blast was triggered when a butane cooking gas truck began discharging (off-loading) cooking gas without waiting for the mandatory cooling time.

The tanker truck finished discharging fresh gas then left without waiting to observe the prescribed cooling time.  The fire exploded like a bomb, and the whole gas station went up.  Many people were killed, and most of them were those that had been in the station queuing all day to get their cylinders refilled in time for Christmas.

WHO declares Ebola outbreak over

Monrovia (AFP) - The world breathed a sigh of relief Thursday as a two-year Ebola epidemic that killed 11,000 and triggered a global health alert was declared over, with Liberia the last country given the all-clear.

The deadliest outbreak in the history of the feared tropical virus wrecked the economies and health systems of the three worst-hit west African nations after it emerged in southern Guinea in December 2013.

At its peak, it devastated Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, with bodies piling up in the streets and overwhelmed hospitals recording hundreds of new cases a week.

Rick Brennan, the World Health Organization's chief of emergency risk management, hailed an important milestone but told reporters in Geneva that "the job is still not done", pointing out that there had already been 10 small flare-ups because of the persistance of the virus in survivors.

UN chief Ban Ki-moon warned the region can expect sporadic cases in the coming year but added "we also expect the potential and frequency of those flare-ups to decrease over time".

Reaction to the announcement was muted in Monrovia, where locals have become accustomed to good news on Ebola being followed by setbacks, and there was no official programme of celebration.

Ghost ship
May 10, 2016
 -  Mystery oil tanker washes up in Liberia with no crew.
April 22 was the Panama-registered Tamaya 1ís last location, when it was heading toward Senegal.
Theories on the ghost ship range from abandonment to piracy.  The vesselís owner might have gone broke and had no money to pay crew members.
