New Zealand earthquake damages Wellington parliament
4 people injured as aftershocks continue to rock Wellington

A shallow earthquake of magnitude 6.9 struck New Zealand near nightfall on Sunday.
6.9 quake Cook Strait, 36 miles SW of Wellington, New Zealand between the islands, Depth 6.3 miles.

The Mercure Hotel on Willis St has been evacuated, amid reports of a floor collapse.
One corner of the building was seen to be slumping 5cm.
Residents have been urged to stay out of the central city as buildings are assessed in the area.

The largest of a series of tremors that have shaken the region in the past few days.
It knocked items off shelves, shattered some windows and brought Wellington trains to a halt.
The quake epicenter was in the Cook Strait that separates the North and South islands.
Some power outages in the South Island, broke water mains, smashed windows and downed power lines.

The quake could be felt in the center of NZ North Island.

It was followed minutes later by another quake of 5.5 and came about 10 hours after a 5.8 tremor in the same region which has been rocked by multiple quakes in recent days.

Dozens of earthquakes were recorded on Sunday.

The fire service received multiple calls to assist people trapped in elevators in Wellington and the tremblor also set off sprinklers in city buildings and cut electricity supplies in many areas.
Wellington Police Inspector reports that the rumble lasted more than a minute.

The article has been updated with an apology. It was a case of sloppy journalism. Some guy heard there was an earthquake in Seddon and googled it. The first Seddon he came across was in Australia so he wrote the article based on that. We're laughing about it here. You should read the comments he got. That writer got a roasting.   Laughing

Seriously, we don't know what's happening right now. The epicentre of the quake is between the North and South Island.
A higher magnitude might effectively give a nationwide quake.
That's possibly the cause of the fifth Christchurch quake I mentioned in another thread.

6.3  earthquake New Zealand
April 24, 2015
-  A 6.1 quake NW of Kaikoura, south island New Zealand.
A strong magnitude 6.3 earthquake has hit near Kaikoura, New Zealand. Witnesses described feeling tremors, felt in Wellington and Christchurch.  The quake centered in Nelson, no immediate reports of major damage, local public transport services were temporarily halted.  The tremors knocked food items from their shelves in the stores and set off alarms.  Locals reported it lasted longer than usual, forcing houses to creak, which caused some people to panic.

5.8 quake New Zealand
May 4, 2015
 -  A 5.6 magnitude earthquake struck northwest of Wanaka, on New Zealand South Island. Hundreds of people felt tremors, broken windows but no major damage. Residents across the South Island reported feeling the quake as a strong, sharp rattle.
