NEVADA Earthquake swarms
April  15,  2011
There have been several quake swarms on the west edge of Nevada across from Mammoth Valley hot springs in California.
This caught my attention last week and they are continuing.
Whether something or nothing I dont know.  It has my interest.

Swarm of small earthquakes recorded along California-Nevada border
April 11, 2011
Dozens of small earthquakes shook up the California-Nevada border in the Eastern Sierra over the last day.
The strongest of the quakes registered magnitude 4.2 and magnitude 4.0 Sunday afternoon Hawthorne, Nevada about 140 miles east of Sacramento.
Smaller quakes have continued into Monday morning.
There are no reports of damage or injuries due to the quake swarm, which also included some quakes on the California side of the border in Mono and Inyo counties.

The Nevada quake swarm is pictured on a California-Nevada map with the Long Valley super-volcano caldera at Mammoth Lakes pictured near the lower center.
The Nevada quakes are not erupting along any previously known fault lines which means this could be some seismic activity related to movement of magma within the caldera of the Long Valley volcano.
The Long Valley volcano map to the left gives a comprehensive view of the radius of the caldera and puts it within the range of the current Nevada quake swarm.

More than 100 small earthquakes shake Spanish Springs(Nevada)
October 14, 2012
RENO, Nev. (KRNV & MyNews4.com) -- Some rattling and rolling in the area has earthquake experts on alert. In the past week more than 100 small earthquakes have shaken the earth beneath Spanish Springs.
So far they've been too small to feel, but quake experts want you to know they're happening. There's no reason to panic - but it's a good reminder to make sure you're prepared.

"People can consider certain mitigation steps in case these earthquakes increase in intensity and there's a larger one," said Ken Smith, associate director of the Nevada Seismological Laboratory.
Smith says most injuries from earthquakes are caused by falling or flying objects - and you don't want to wait for a big quake to get ready.
"Secure your water heaters. Secure your valuables. Secure your book cases," Smith said.

It's not strange for a dozen quakes this size to happen in a week, but there have been at least 115 since October 8, and about 60 of those have been since Thursday.
"These things are totally unpredictable," Smith said. "It could stop today, or it could keep going at a level of very small events that no one would feel."
Or they could get stronger. so far they're small - with the biggest two quakes shaking at magnitude one - but there's potential for one that really rocks Reno.

"We have faults around here that are capable of magnitude seven type events," Smith said.
So this week the Great Nevada Shakeout will teach people to drop, cover and hold-on just in case there's a big quake. It's Nevada's largest earthquake drill and it's this Thursday, October 18 at 10:18 am.

Seismologists monitor Carson City quake swarm
23 Jun 2013
Nevada seismologists and emergency managers say they're monitoring an earthquake swarm in Carson City that has the potential to result in a major temblor.
But officials from the Nevada Seismological Laboratory at the University of Nevada, Reno, stress they can't predict how the sequence of over 120 minor quakes that began June 1 will play out or if it will result in larger events.

The largest quakes of the swarm have been one of magnitude-2.9 on June 5 and two of magnitude-2.8 on Thursday and June 16. While each has been followed by many smaller quakes, no injuries or major damage have been reported.
UNR seismologists say based on past seismic activity in the region, the probability of larger quakes increases as sequences progress.
They say the swarm is of concern because it may be associated with the Genoa Fault Zone, which is capable of producing major quakes of magnitude-7 or more.
Nevada is the third most seismically active state in the nation behind California and Alaska.

Mag. 4.1 quake leads off two dozen earthquakes 37 miles from St. George
29 Jan 2014
A swarm, or cluster, of 24 earthquakes have been recorded Tuesday, the first about 37 miles west-northwest of St. George in Nevada, and the others within about a 10-mile radius of the first.

NEVADA Lake Tahoe region rattled by 5 quakes – region long overdue for 7 magnitude quake
June 22, 2014
In less than 30 minutes, the Lake Tahoe area had 5 earthquakes ranging in magnitude from 0.8 to 2.8 Friday evening. The first quake hit at 5:13 and was the strongest of the quintet, while the epicenter was 4.4 miles from Mt. Rose. A tsunami-producing fault in Lake Tahoe is overdue for another earthquake, scientists said in 2012 at the annual meeting of the American Geophysical Union. The West Tahoe Fault is capable of producing a magnitude-7.3 earthquake and tsunamis up to 30 feet (10 meters) high in the clear blue lake, where million-dollar homes line the shore, researchers said. Earthquakes strike every 3,000 to 4,000 years on the fault, and the most recent shaker was 4,500 years ago, indicating the fault is overdue for another earthquake.

Because the fault crosses the lake, scientists worry a future earthquake will cause a tsunami in Lake Tahoe. The monster waves could form in two ways: by the fault displacing ground under the lake, similar to Japan’s Tohoku tsunami, or by causing landslides that displace the water. A combination of both could also create an even bigger wave. The most recent earthquake in the Tahoe region was about 575 years ago, on the Incline Fault, which becomes active about every 10,000 to 15,000 years. Scientists estimate its earthquake size potential at magnitude 7. At more than 1,645 feet (501 meters) deep, Lake Tahoe, which straddles the California and Nevada border in the seismically active Sierra Nevada region, is one of the world’s deepest freshwater lakes. We will continue to monitor this increased earthquake activity. – KOLO, Live Science

Earthquake swarm in northwest Nevada
August 20, 2014
An earthquake swarm has hit the northwest corner of Nevada near the borders of Oregon and California.
There have been 87 quakes of magnitude 1 or more since Monday and 96 since Aug. 13 in the area of the Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge, according to Nevada Seismological Laboratory.

The largest was a magnitude 3.6 at 9 p.m. on Monday. In the last two days there have been six of magnitude 3 or greater.
The swarm has been happening since mid July but picked up noticeably in the last two days, said Ken Smith, the seismic network manager for the Nevada Seismological Laboratory.

Because the population is light, there are fewer earthquake sensors in the area, Smith said.
"It is pretty remote and as a result of that, the seismic network is pretty sparse," Smith said. "The earthquakes are hard to locate.

While these kinds of swarms are not unusual in Nevada, this is the first time he's seen one in northern Washoe County. It seems to be caused by normal movement of the tectonic plates that make up the surface of the earth and there's no evidence to suggest a major quake is coming.

"We're keeping a close eye on it and keep up with it as much as we can," Smith said.
The quakes are reported felt in Cedarville in northeast California and in the Lakeview area of southeast Oregon.

Nevada quake swarm
November 7, 2014
-   Intense swarm of earthquakes in the Nevada desert near Oregon and California.  The 4.6 temblor Nov. 4 was followed by several quakes or magnitude 3 or greater.  There have been 42 earthquakes greater than magnitude 3 in the past 3 months,
719 earthquakes since July.  This does slightly increase the likelihood of a larger earthquake.

I was looking for a link about this quake swarm, as I was noticing LOTS of quakes daily the past week.  Nov. 6 was the FULL MOON.

Oregon, California, Nevada Earthquake Swarm
December 11, 2014
-  Since mid-July, state and federal geologists have detected over 1700 earthquakes in the area where the Oregon, California, and Nevada borders meet.  Nevada swarm appeared to have stopped, then there was a magnitude 4.2 earthquake and tremors continue.  There has been at least an earthquake an hour since the swarm started again, though the reason is still unclear.
