Mosquitos capable of spreading a potentially deadly virus have been found in Britain for the first time since 1945
Feb. 2012 The culex modestus species was found breeding in ‘significant’ numbers at several marshlands sites in Kent and Essex during 2010 and 2011.
The insects are carriers of the West Nile virus, which can cause neurological disorders and even death.
They are thought to have arrived via foreign ships but the virus has not yet been detected, say scientists.
‘It’s not clear how long this species of mosquito has been in the UK,’ said Nick Golding, of Oxford University and the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology.
Experts suspect the species may be behind recent outbreaks of West Nile virus in southern Europe.
Almost 100 cases were recorded by January – more than two-thirds were in Greece and the rest in Hungary, Italy and Romania.
One strain was imported into New York from Israel and Tunisia in 1999 and led to an outbreak lasting more than ten years.
In continental Europe the mosquitos pass on the virus to both birds and humans when they feed on their blood.
‘However, in the UK the mosquitos biting habits and ability to transmit West Nile virus have yet to be investigated,’ added Miles Nunn, a CEH molecular parasitologist.
The virus, commonly found in Africa, the Middle East and West Asia is a ‘serious danger to the world’, says the World Health Organization.

Romanians vote on whether to oust president
29 Jul 2012 — Romania's unpopular president was fighting for his political life on Sunday as Romanians voted on whether to oust him, part of a political battle that has raised questions about the rule of law in the fledgling European Union member. Early indications were that he might keep his job due to a low voter turnout.
Traian Basescu's rivals in the government are seeking to push him out for the second time in five years. They claim the 60-year-old populist violated the constitution by meddling in government business, coddling cronies and using the secret services against enemies.
Basescu, a former ship captain whose popularity has plummeted over economic challenges, says he's the victim of a political vendetta and has urged his supporters to boycott the vote — a tactic that may help him survive thanks to a rule requiring turnout to be more than half of the total electorate.
At 5 p.m. (1400 GMT) after seven hours of voting, the turnout was just 26.89 percent, according to the Central Election Bureau. That was lower than June local elections when the turnout was about 56 percent. Polls were due to close at 11 p.m. (2000 GMT) with 18 million Romanians eligible to vote, including many living abroad.
Basescu told reporters he was at peace with himself. "I have done my duty as president in a manner that sometimes pleased people and at other times did not please a large number of Romanians," he said.

Over 15,000 Romanians protest against amnesty bill
More than 15,000 Romanians, including President Klaus Iohannis, protested across Romania Sunday against controversial decrees that will pardon corrupt politicians and decriminalise other offences.
The social-democratic government of Prime Minister Sorin Grindeanu published two emergency decrees on Wednesday that will set free inmates serving sentences of up to five years for non-violent crimes.
If the decrees are adopted, about 2,500 people, including several elected officials and magistrates who are behind bars after being convicted of corruption, will be released.
Grindeanu wants to implement the measures through emergency ordinances that would bypass parliament and would not require Iohannis' signature.
"Several political officials who have judicial issues want to change the legislation and weaken the rule of law," Iohannis said, as he stood among protesters in Bucharest.
"It is unacceptable to modify the law so that the cases of dozens, even hundreds, of politicians, are wiped out," he added.
Justice Minister Florin Iordache defended the proposals, saying they would help unburden overcrowded jails.
Iohannis was elected in November 2014 under an anti-graft platform and urged politicians to stamp out entrenched corruption in one of Europe's poorest countries.
After his election, he said he wanted a graft-free country when his term ends in 2019.
On Wednesday, Iohannis attended a government meeting in the hope of stopping the decrees from being adopted.
Protesters gathered near University Square in downtown Bucharest before marching to the government building, chanting "Resign" and "Democracy, not amnesty".
