Magnesium, Calcium deficiency common * boronMagnesium's Importance Far Greater Than Previously Imagined
Calcium deficiency is a common nutritional concern, but how many folks consider the vital importance of magnesium in human health and disease?
New research published in the journal BMC Bioinformatics indicates that magnesium's role in human health and disease is far more significant and complicated than previously imagined.
While it is well known that all living things require magnesium, and that it is found in over 300 enzymes in the human body, including those enzymes utilizing or synthesizing ATP (the molecular unit of currency for energy transfer), the new studied titled, "3,751 magnesium binding sites have been detected on human proteins," indicates that a deficiency of magnesium may profoundly affect a far wider range of biological structures than previously understood.[i]
The proteome, or entire set of proteins expressed by the human genome, contains well over 100,000 distinct protein structures, despite the fact that there are believed to be only 20,300 protein-coding genes in the human genome.
The discovery of the "magneseome," as its being called, adds additional complexity to the picture, indicating that the presence or absence of adequate levels of this basic mineral may epigenetically alter the expression and behavior of the proteins in our body, thereby altering the course of both health and disease.
Indeed, modern medicine and nutrition fixates primarily on calcium deficiency (due, in part, to the WHO's highly unscientific definition of osteoporosis), even in the face of accumulating peer-reviewed research indicating that excess calcium consumption can greatly increase cardiac morbidity and mortality.
Research relevant to magnesium has been accumulating for the past 40 years at a steady rate of approximately 2,000 new studies a year. Our database project has indexed well over 100 health benefits of magnesium thus far. For the sake of brevity, we will address seven key therapeutic applications for magnesium as follows:
Fibromyalgia: Not only is magnesium deficiency common in those diagnosed with fibromyalgia, [ii] [iii] but relatively low doses of magnesium (50 mg), combined with malic acid in the form of magnesium malate, has been clinically demonstrated to improve pain and tenderness in those to which it was administered.[iv]
Atrial Fibrillation: A number of studies now exist showing that magnesium supplementation reduce atrial fibrillation, either by itself, or in combination with conventional drug agents.[v]
Diabetes, Type 2: Magnesium deficiency is common in type 2 diabetics, at an incidence of 13.5 to 47.7% according to a 2007 study.[vi] Research has also shown that type 2 diabetics with peripheral neuropathy and coronary artery disease have lower intracellular magnesium levels.[vii] Oral magnesium supplementation has been shown to reduce plasma fasting glucose and raising HDL cholesterol in patients with type 2 diabetes.[viii] It has also been shown to improve insulin sensitivity and metabolic control in type 2 diabetic subjects.[ix]
Premenstrual Syndrome: Magnesium deficiency has been observed in women affected by premenstrual syndrome.[x] It is no surprise therefore that it has been found to alleviate premenstrual symptoms of fluid retention,[xi] as well as broadly reducing associated symptoms by approximately 34% in women, aged 18-45, given 250 mg tablets for a 3-month observational period.[xii] When combined with B6, magnesium supplementation has been found to improve anxiety-related premenstrual symptoms.[xiii]
Cardiovascular Disease and Mortality: Low serum magnesium concentrations predict cardiovascular and all-cause mortality.[xiv] There are a wide range of ways that magnesium may confer its protective effects. It may act like a calcium channel blocker,[xv] it is hypotensive,[xvi] it is antispasmodic (which may protect against coronary artery spasm),[xvii] and anti-thrombotic.[xviii] Also, the heart muscle cells are exceedingly dense in mitochondria (as high as 100 times more per cell than skeletal muscle), the "powerhouses" of the cell," which require adequate magnesium to produce ATP via the citric acid cycle.
Migraine Disorders: Blood magnesium levels have been found to be significantly lower in those who suffer from migraine attacks.[xix] [xx] A recent Journal of Neural Transmission article titled, "Why all migraine patients should be treated with magnesium," pointed out that routine blood tests do not accurately convey the true body magnesium stores since less than 2% is in the measurable, extracellular space, "67% is in the bone and 31% is located intracellularly."[xxi] The authors argued that since "routine blood tests are not indicative of magnesium status, empiric treatment with at least oral magnesium is warranted in all migraine sufferers." Indeed, oral magnesium supplementation has been found to reduce the number of headache days in children experiencing frequent migranous headaches, [xxii] and when combined with l-carnitine, is effective at reducing migraine frequency in adults, as well.[xxiii]
Aging: While natural aging is a healthy process, accelerated aging has been noted to be a feature of magnesium deficiency,[xxiv] especially evident in the context of long space-flight missions where low magnesium levels are associated with cardiovascular aging over 10 times faster than occurs on earth.[xxv] Magnesium supplementation has been shown to reverse age-related neuroendocrine and sleep EEG changes in humans.[xxvi] One of the possible mechanisms behind magnesium deficiency associated aging is that magnesium is needed to stabilize DNA and promotes DNA replication. It is also involved in healing up of the ends of the chromosomes after they are divided in mitosis.[xxvii]
Best Sources of Magnesium In The Diet
The best source of magnesium is from food, and one way to identify magnesium-containing foods are those which are green, i.e. chlorophyll rich. Chlorophyll, which enable plants to capture solar energy and convert it into metabolic energy, has a magnesium atom at its center. Without magnesium, in fact, plants could not utilize the sun's light energy.
Magnesium, however, in its elemental form is colorless, and many foods that are not green contain it as well. The point is that when found complexed with food cofactors, it is absorbed and utilized more efficiently than in its elemental form, say, extracted from limestone in the form of magnesium oxide.

Next time you go to purchase those multivitamins do a little digging, you may be surprised to find out that your “vitamin” is not made by who you thought. Did you know that more than 95% of the vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that you can buy at “health food” stores and close to 100% of those sold in other stores are now made by the same few pharmaceutical and chemical companies who supply them to most all the vitamin and mineral companies?
Many popular brands of vitamins are “fortified” with the synthetic counterpart of the nutrient claimed to be in the pill. There are many reasons for these synthetic ingredients but the main reason they are used is to increase the bottom line; it is much cheaper to source different chemical byproducts to simulate a chemical make-up than it is to extract minerals and vitamins from growing healthy food. After the money is saved by sourcing dangerous chemicals instead of real ingredients, Big Pharma and their “chemical brothers” can now spend billions making you think that these imitation vitamins are good for you; for every dollar pharmaceutical companies spend on “basic research,” $19 goes toward promotion and marketing.
Below is a list of 5 toxic ingredients contained in versions of the most popular vitamin on the market today, Centrum, made by Pfizer. Less than a year ago, Pfizer was being sued for making false claims about their Centrum multivitamins and there alleged ability to promote “breast health” and “colon health.” The reality is that these supposed “vitamins” are merely synthetic chemical counterparts that do not carry the same benefits as the naturally occurring minerals and, in fact, can cause a myriad of damaging health effects.
First toxic ingredient
Ferrous Fumarate C4H2FeO4
Ferrous fumarate is the anhydrous salt formed by combining ferrous iron with fumaric acid and used as a hematinic (a preparation used to improve the quality of blood). Unfortunately, inorganic iron is pro-oxidative, stimulating the damaging effects in the body of substances known as free radicals. There is evidence linking high inorganic iron intake to cardiovascular disease and cancer. Excessive iron accumulates in the liver, and may feed bacterial and viral infection. Iron is found, in a healthy body, in the form of metalloproteins, because in exposed or in free form it causes production of free radicals that are generally toxic to cells. In its “free” form iron binds avidly to virtually all biomolecules so it will adhere nonspecifically to cell membranes, nucleic acids, proteins etc., causing substantial damage. When, for instance, iron binds with LDL, it oxidizes it, resulting in obstruction.
Second toxic ingredient
Chromic Chloride CrCl3
Although trivalent chromium like Chromic Chloride is far less poisonous than the hexavalent form, it is definitely a toxic substance, known to exhibit genotoxic, mutagenic, teratrogenic (reproductive hazard) and is on the Hazardous Substance list. Its main use is in the metal industries for chromizing; in the manufacture of chromium metal and compounds; as a catalyst for polymerization of olefins and other organic reactions; as a textile mordant; in tanning; in corrosion inhibitors; as a waterproofing agent.
Third toxic ingredient
Magnesium Stearate Mg(C18H35O2)2
Used to make large scale production tableting of supplements and drugs possible, this chemical excipient is produced through reacting sodium stearate with magnesium sulfate, in a way similar to the production of other hydrogenated oils. Magnesium Stearate has shown to cause death from inhalation of the powder.
Fourth toxic ingredient
Manganese Sulfate MnSO4H2O
The Material Safety Data Sheet classifies this chemical as a hazardous substance. Toxicological data indicates it is tumerigenic, mutagenic and teratogenic (adversely effects reproduction).
Fifth toxic ingredient
Sodium Selenite Na2SeO3
An inorganic form of selenium with known toxicity. Studies have shown it may cause tumors, genetic mutations, interfere with reproduction, and cause birth defects. Although it is an essential antioxidant when found in food as biologically active selenium, inorganic selenium as selenite has a pro-oxidative effect.
What can you do to make sure your vitamins are not just chemical cocktails with ostensible health benefits?
Below is a list of precautions one can use to avoid purchasing synthetic vitamins.

Look for the words “100 percent natural” on the product’s label. Some product labels may contain the words “natural,” but manufacturers can claim “natural” on their nutritional products if at least 10 percent of the product comes from natural food sources. The Organic Consumers Organization recommends looking for products that contain “100 percent plant-based” or “100 percent animal-based” on the product’s label.
Find the “food source” list on the products label. If the product’s label does not contain a list of natural food sources, then the product is synthetic. Look for food sources such as yeast, fish, vegetable and citrus.
Identify whole foods in the ingredient list instead of the particular nutrient. Dr. Ben Kim, a chiropractor and acupuncturist with his own radio show, says to look for foods on the list of ingredients that contain a certain vitamin, such as “acerola cherry powder,” which contains vitamin C. If you can identify “vitamin C” in the ingredient list, Kim says you can almost guarantee that the vitamin is synthetic.
Look for salt forms on the product label, a synthetic added to supplements for increasing the stability of the vitamin or mineral. Some of the salt forms to look for include acetate, bitartrate, chloride, gluconate, hydrochloride, nitrate and succinate.
Learn how to read the product’s label by looking for keywords that indicate the supplement is synthetic. Words that end in “ide” or “ate” indicate that the product contains salt forms, which are synthetics.
For instance, if you see chloride, hydrochloride, acetate or nitrate on the list of ingredients, the manufacturer used synthetics for the product.
Additionally, the letters “dl” that appear before the name of an ingredient indicates the supplement is synthetic. As an example, look for “fish oils” when buying a vitamin A supplement. If the product’s label states “palmitate,” it is a synthetic vitamin A supplement.

Magnesium and menopause

What Boron May Do for You
Boron is a trace mineral which is important for strong bones. However, it is often ignored in health maintenance and combating disease. It metabolizes magnesium, phosphorous and calcium. This specific element plays a huge role in preventing osteoporosis and utilizing additional important minerals and vitamin D. Your body structure is reliant on strong bones, and boron helps to avoid the aging effect on the bones.
Boron may be understood as a general health enhancer, and we may not yet know the full spectrum of its influence.
Here are some known conditions that have been improved by boron supplementation.
While boron is an effective treatment for 95% or more in the relief of arthritis (provided the joint has not completely deteriorated) its range of action extends beyond that. It works very well in alleviating arthritis, partly due to its crucial role of calcium integration into the cartilage and bone. This is important for all of us as we age, even if we do not have arthritis. Aging is partly associated with weakening of the bones as they become increasingly porous -- adequate boron can prevent this aging effect.
For instance, an elderly lady began to take boron daily a few months before her operation for an artificial hip that had been scheduled before she started to take the boron. The surgeon found that he could not use the usual saw for cutting the bone in the hip replacement surgery; the bone was just too hard, like that of a young person, so he had to use a stronger saw to do the job.
It seems that those who are under 60 years of age with arthritis will see results the first month of boron supplementation while those in their 60's will notice relief in the second month. For those over 70 years of age, it may take 3 months of supplementation to get the desired results.
Boron will usually help animals with arthritis. Farm animals that graze may develop a boron deficiency simply because the land is boron deficient. Dogs and horses commonly experience arthritis and may well be helped with supplementation.
Menopausal Symptoms and Sex Hormones
Boron is essential for estrogen production and can have a rapid effect in helping menopausal women.
It may quickly reduce hot flashes. Boron may bring the sex drive back, even if it's been absent for years.
Minerals and trace-elements get to the 'bottom of things' so to speak; they are often the missing link and can be extremely effective. "Boron raises the level of natural sex hormones in the body and so would eliminate the need for HRT or hormone replacement therapy," states Dr. Rex E. Newnham. Zinc is also important for sex hormones for both sexes.
Allergies and Parasites
Because boron will overcome the symptoms of 95% of arthritis, including rheumatoid arthritis, Dr. Newnham speculates that allergies that are involved especially with rheumatoid arthritis are probably being reduced by boron.
Prof. Roger Wyburn-Mason identified certain amoebae that parasitized the joints of rheumatoid arthritis sufferers. Dr. Newnham states that boron can control these parasites. He discusses the role of infection and parasites further in his book, Beating Arthritis & Beating Osteoporosis. Rheumatoid arthritis sufferers often experience the Herxheimer reaction for a week or so after starting boron. This causes a temporary worsening of the arthritis and is due to die-off from the parasites that enter into the blood prior to elimination by the white blood cells.
Boron and Systemic Candida
Boron can help overcome Candida Albicans, according to Dr. Newnham, but other measures are also needed such as a good probiotic, an immune rebuilder such as Tiaga Extract, Moringa powder or Sweet Wheat; and anti-fungals such as Tiaga Extract, Herbal Tonic, Cleansing Tea and Living Clay. (Organa Mineral Drink is a builder and detoxifier and naturally contains boron.) With Candida, a restrictive diet is also important.
In his book Dr. Newnham gives an account of a retired lady with congestive heart failure and arthritis. After only 2 months on the boron, both her arthritis and her congestive heart failure were considerably improved.
Dr. Newnham heard of a case of hay fever that was greatly improved with boron. This is understandable if we consider that the improvement in calcium metabolism alone, for which much of boron's action is centered on, will tend to calm the system, tending to reduce allergies and the auto-immune reactions involved in many health conditions -- not just arthritis. Boron will help to incorporate all the other minerals into the bones reports Dr. Newnham, "so it is not unreasonable to assume that boron may also help with the correct cellular uptake of minerals and trace elements into the cells.
Boron and Fluoride
Fluoride in the form added to tap water and toothpaste is hazardous to our health. It is industrial waste that someone is making money on by selling to those who add it to our water systems. Fluoride in sea water and trace mineral supplements is in a form and combination with all the other minerals and trace elements that renders it non-toxic.
According to Dr. Newnham, boron will inactivate fluoride in the body, forming a harmless compound.
For arthritis and other deficiency symptoms that may be linked to other health conditions, Dr. Newnham recommends 10 mgs. Some populations have as much as 30 mg a day in their diet with only good effects; in most western countries the soils are grossly deficient.
