Istanbul, Bosporus, Dardanelles

Istanbul, Bosporus, Dardanelles

Istanbul straddles 2 continents
The Bosporus is a natural strait and internationally-significant waterway located in northwestern Turkey that forms part of the continental boundary between Europe and Asia, and separates Asian Turkey from European Turkey. The world's narrowest strait used for international navigation, the Bosporus connects the Black Sea with the Sea of Marmara, and the Aegean, and Mediterranean Seas the Dardanelles.

Bosphorus Blockade
Dec 10, 2015 -  The Russia-Turkey Standoff

There have been conflicting reports on the current state of ship traffic through the Bosphorus, with some sources claiming that Turkey has implemented a blockade on Russia.  Other sources, including the Russian Navy, have stated that the Russian naval vessels have not had problems transiting the straits, though there were also some reports of Turkish submarines making an appearance in close vicinity of the Russian ships.

Yet other reports indicate that what the Turks are doing is simply harassment in the form of greatly delaying the processing of ships through the straits.  Neither Russia nor Turkey have issued any statements concerning this matter.  After the first wave of reports, there have not been additional dispatches from the Bosphorus.  Erdogan knows a Bosphorus blockade would likely not yield the desired result.

Thus, Erdogan is rattling the saber but has not decided to draw it just yet and actually close the straits. Indeed, considering that he has had that option ever since the Russian operation in Syria began and that the closing of the straits would actually hinder the Russian operation to a far greater extent than the attack on the Su-24 that killed one of its crew members and led to the loss of a search-and-rescue helicopter and the death of a Russian naval infantryman, it is odd that he had not made this move yet and opted instead to take the far riskier route of a military escalation. The fact that he had not done so suggests the act of closing the straits is not as easy or consequence-free for Turkey as it might appear.

NATO failed to come to Turkey’s defense.  Erdogan has painted himself into a corner.
Russia could negotiate an agreement with Iraq to establish an air base there.
(I suspect this will occur.)

I personally consider Bosphorus a critical indicator, but maybe not

Russia to monitor NATO vessels in Bosphorus
July 6, 2016
Interfax  -  Russia to monitor NATO vessels in Bosphorus with new long-range radars from Crimea.  Russian military will deploy over-the-horizon long-range radars in the Baltic and Black Seas to keep a weather eye on NATO operations.  A similar radar station is likely to be installed in Crimea, able to detect any foreign warship passing through the Bosphorus. Turkish army seizes power from government
July 16, 2016  BREAKING NEWS
 -  Turkey is now being run by a "peace council."
The Turkish military announced on Friday night that it had taken over power from the government in the name of democratic order.  The power in the country has been seized in its entirety.

Turkey has been stormed by the military and staff have been asked to hand in their mobile phones.

A top general is among several people being held at the military headquarters in Ankara.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has not been heard from, but some reports said he is safe.

As news of the coup emerged, Turkish security forces partially shut down the 2 bridges across the Bosphorus Strait in Istanbul as military jets were heard flying low over Ankara.

The Bosphorus and Fatih bridges were closed by the gendarmerie -- a branch of the Turkish military dedicated to internal security -- for traffic traveling from Asia to Europe.

Meanwhile, Turkish military aircraft were heard flying low over Ankara.

New bridge over Bosporus
Aug 27, 2016
-  New Turkey suspension bridge connects Europe and Asia.
Turkey President Erdogan opened a third bridge in Istanbul spanning the Bosporus strait between Asia and Europe. The government says it is the widest of its kind in the world.

The bridge named Yavuz Sultan Selim (peace) is meant to alleviate the traffic problems on the other 2 Bosporus bridges.  It is the longest of the 3 bridges now spanning the strait and carries an eight-lane road and twin railway tracks.  The First Bosporus Bridge opened in 1973.

TURKEY Airspace, airports
April 18, 19,  2010
-  Ash clouds from the Iceland volcano explosion travel toward Turkey, where more than 250 flights from Istanbul have been canceled.

Turkey eases airspace shutdown as Europe allows one-third of flights April 19th.

All Turkish airports remain open.
Volcano leaves many stranded

As the ash clouds created by a volcanic eruption in Iceland slowly approach Turkey, flight cancellations in
Istanbul have left the city’s Atatürk Airport full of desperate passengers waiting to fly to destinations in Europe.

In the fourth day of the Europe-wide air-travel chaos, the number of canceled flights from Istanbul has surpassed 250, officials said.
Neither airport officials nor stranded passengers have any idea when the flights will be able to depart.

Travelers at the airport said they were tired and unhappy to be at the mercy of natural forces.
As they wait, many are searching for alternative routes to reach their destinations.

The volcanic ash clouds are expected to arrive in Turkish airspace Tuesday; experts have warned that they may cause heath issues for infants, the elderly and people suffering from heart or lung problems.
