Hanukah Hanukkah Chanukah, festival of lights

Hanukah,  Hanukkah

Festival of lights

Jesus celebrated Hanukkah

And it was at Jerusalem the feast of the dedication, and it was winter.
And Jesus walked in the temple in Solomon's porch
John 10:22-23

Did you know Jesus, or Yeshua as He was known throughout His life, celebrated Hanukkah?
During His earthly ministry, Hanukkah was known as the feast of dedication. In fact, it is still known as the feast of dedication today.
Yet, most followers of Jesus today think of Hanukkah as only a Jewish holiday – not something they necessarily should mark.

I have even heard Christians say Hanukkah is an extra-biblical festival – and not mentioned in the Bible. Next time you hear that, just point to John 10:22-23.

I say, if it was worth Yeshua's attention, it is worth mine.

Surprise! Jesus Christ was not a blond-haired, blue-eyed Gentile. Yeshua of Nazareth was raised in an observant Jewish family in a culture where the Torah was the National Constitution.
So what is Hanukkah all about?

About 175 years before the birth of Jesus, the Syrian empire ruled over the land of Israel.
The Syrian ruler, Antiochus IV, was a tyrant – a madman, a Hitler archetype. He sought to suppress all the Jewish laws. Thousands of Jews were killed.

All Jewish worship was forbidden. The scrolls were confiscated and burned. Honoring the Sabbath, circumcision and the dietary laws were prohibited under penalty of death.
Antiochus conspired to depose and later assassinate the righteous high priest, Yochanan. Antiochus' henchmen ordered 90-year-old rabbi Eliezer to eat pork as an example to his followers.
He refused and was put to death.

In a plot to undermine the strength of the Jewish family and morality, Antiochus decreed that any Jewish maiden who was to be married had to first spend the night with the local governor or commander.

The Syrians, under the command of Holofernes, laid siege to the town of Bethulia. While the town elders discussed a plan to surrender when their food supply ran out, a young and beautiful widow, Yehudit, the daughter of Yochanan the high priest, told the people to maintain faith in their God. She told them she had a plan they would have to accept on faith.

Yehudit took a large basket of cheese, bread and wine to Holofernes. She told the commander that, in exchange for mercy on her people, she would tell him how to capture the town. She explained that her people's faith in God remained strong, making the fight against them that much more difficult. However, she said, soon the supply of kosher food would be gone. When that occurred, the people would begin to eat the flesh of unclean animals thus provoking God's anger and causing the town to fall.

She agreed to stay with Holofernes, returning to Bethulia each day to find out how food supplies were holding out. She gained the trust of the commander who was eager to spend time with the beautiful widow as well as to win the siege.

After a few days, Yehudit told Holofernes that Bethulia was now out of food. He had only to wait a few more days for the Jews to begin eating the non-kosher animals. Holofernes invited her to come alone to his tent that night to celebrate. She agreed, inviting him to eat her salty goat-cheese. As he ate, he grew thirsty and Yehudit gave him the wine she had brought with her. While Yehudit pretended to eat and drink, Holofernes became drunk. Soon, he was in a deep sleep. Yehudit took Holofernes' sword and cut off his head. She and her maidservant put his head in a cloth and returned to Bethulia.

Acra, site of ancient Jewish Revolt unearthed
Nov 4, 2015
-  Archaeological find in Jerusalem, City of David.
Archaeologists in Jerusalem may have solved a geographical mystery.
The Acra was built specifically to control access to the Temple Mount, and cut it off.
Excavators recently unearthed what they think are the ruins of the Acra, a fortress constructed 2,000 years ago by Antiochus Epiphanes (215-164 B.C.).  At one time Maccabees Jews controlled the fortress.

I wondered why I couldnt find Acra in the bible.  Its not in the 66 books of the canon of the Holy Bible.  Its in the Maccabees, one of the books catholics add.

Maccabees is interesting history but NOT on par with the inspired Holy Word of GOD.  The celebration of the miracle of Hannukkah is due to the victory and God's blessing on the Maccabees.

NEVER EVER mistake extras for the inspired Word of GOD!

Hanukkah is celebrated with gifts for 8 days
In 2015 it begins December 6, Sonday

In 2005 Christmas Eve December 24- 25 and1st day of Hanukkah fell on the same Day.

Maccabean coin found
Dec 21, 2016
-  Just in time for Hanukkah!  A 2,000-year-old coin from Maccabean revolt found in Jerusalem.  A bronze coin that was in circulation in the time of King Antiochus IV Epiphanes, who decreed that the Jews must be annihilated and during whose reign the Maccabean revolt took place, has been discovered at the Tower of David archaeological site in Jerusalem.

During routine cleaning, Orna Cohen noticed a metal object among the stones of the Hasmonean Wall inside the citadel. A careful examination revealed that it was a bronze prutah, a coin that was in use over 2,000 years ago.

The front of the coin features Antiochus wearing a crown. The reverse features the image of a goddess wrapped in a scarf.  Officials know that these coins were minted in Acre, between 172 and 168 BCE.

Antiochus death sentence on Jews sparked the Maccabean revolt, and the joyous re-sanctification the Holy Temple and the miracle of the oil for only a day lasted 8 days, an event commemorated by Hanukkah.
