Gaza rocket hits south Israel

Qassam explodes in open area just hours after Russia's Lavrov calls on Hamas' Mashaal to stop 'unconscionable firing of rockets' on Israel

A few hours after Russia called on Hamas to stop firing rockets into Israel, (next post)
a Qassam launched from northern Gaza Thursday evening exploded in an open area within the Ashkelon Beach Regional Council's limits.

There were no reports of injury or damage in the rocket attack. The 'Color Red' rocket alert sounded before the Qassam hit.

The attack followed two days of calm in the area surrounding the Gaza Strip. The last rocket to hit Israel's southern region was fired on Monday, Passover eve.

According to a report published Thursday by the Shin Bet there has been a significant rise in the number of attacks on Israel emanating from Gaza.

The report said 36 attacks in the Gaza area included 25 rockets, five mortar shells, five shooting attacks and one anti-tank missile attack. In March, 35 rockets were launched from the Gaza Strip into Israel and six mortar shells, compared to five rockets and five shells in February.

Earlier Thursday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told Hamas politburo chief Khaled Mashaal in a phone conversation that the Islamist group must stop the "unconscionable firing of rockets from the Gaza Strip into southern Israel."

Mashaal said that the Hamas leadership has decided to "maintain the calm, and is not interested in escalating the tension. He promised that his organization would take "appropriate measures to prevent the rocket fire from Gaza.",7340,L-3870956,00.html

Russia Asks Hamas to Stop Rockets

Russia Asks Hamas to Stop Rockets

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov spoke Thursday with Hamas head in Syria Khaled Mashaal. The two spoke by phone about recent developments in the Middle East.

Lavrov told Mashaal that Hamas must stop the fire of rockets on Israeli civilians in the Gaza area. He reportedly termed the attacks “unacceptable.”

Gaza terrorists have carried out increasingly frequent rocket attacks in recent weeks; one such attack killed a Thai worker on an Israeli kibbutz (cooperative community). Terrorists fired a rocket at the Eshkol region near Gaza on Monday night, when Jewish residents of the area were celebrating Passover. No injuries were reported in that attack.

In addition, terrorist groups have continued attacking Israeli soldiers along the Gaza barrier, and on Friday killed two soldiers.

Typical Palestinian LIES

According to Russian media, Mashaal told Lavrov that Hamas is not behind the rocket attacks, and has no intention of escalating violence in the Gaza region. Hamas is attempting to put an end to the rocket attacks, he said.

Lavrov and Mashaal also discussed the latest meeting of the Diplomatic Quartet of the United States, Russia, the United Nations, and the European Union. The meeting was held two weeks ago in Russia.

In addition, sources said, Lavrov emphasized the importance of “Palestinian unity.” Hamas has created its own Palestinian Authority in Gaza after breaking away from the Fatah-led PA based in Ramallah, and tensions remain high between the two organizations.

The fifth air strike rocked Gaza City.

Major Eliraz Peretz, deputy commander of the Golani Brigade's 12th Battalion and resident of the settlement of Eli, and Staff-Sergeant Ilan Sviatkovsky of Rishon Lezion were killed in that incident.

located in the northern part of Gaza.

Another strike, they said, targeted a factory in Gaza City's Sabra neighborhood.
Reuters reported that two children were injured from shrapnel and that serious damage was caused.
When innocents are injured or killed, the FAULT lies with Hamas who continually attack Israel.

In addition, a number of missiles were fired towards open areas in the Khan Younis area, the Palestinians reported.

Israeli warplanes also targeted a metal workshop in central Gaza, they said.

According to the Palestinians, at least one missile was fired at a Hamas naval police outpost in Rafah.

There were no reports of injury or damage in the rocket attack. The 'Color Red' rocket alert sounded before the Qassam hit.

Spokesperson's Unit confirmed a number of strikes were carried out against weapons labs.

"The assault comes in response to the rocket that was fired at the Hof Ashkelon Regional Council last night.
The IDF will not tolerate any attempt to harm the citizens of the State of Israel or IDF soldiers and
will continue to operate determinedly and forcefully against any element that operates terror against the State of Israel.
