Gary Sherrill kills 'demon possessed' son, David, with axe iGary Sherrill kills 'demon possessed' son, David, with axe in Phoenix Arizona
A US man hacked his 13-year-old son to death with an axe because he believed he was "a demon and was going to eat him."
Gary Sherroll, 51, of Phoenix, Arizona, has been charged with murder for a crime that has shocked Americans.
Police went to Sherrill's home after his ex-wife called them, concerned that her son's father had not returned David Sherrill as promised and was not answering her calls.
When they arrived on the scene Sherrill told them that David wasn't home but then started rambling about being a good man, a boy scout leader and that he would never hurt children.
It was then that police barged into his home and discovered the David's body.
Police said Sherrill claimed he killed his son because he was a "demon possessed" and was trying to eat him.
"It is difficult, we find it hard to believe that there are people still out in this world who would do this kind of harm to another person, even more so, to their own child,’ Phoenix Police Department Sargeant Steve Martos told AZ Central.
A figure of praying hands and a candle depicting the Virgin Mary could be seen in the otherwise blocked-out windows of Sherrill's home. The man had aluminium foil blocking out his windows.
A neighbour said she had concerns about Sherrill and had previously called Child Protective Services because she was worried about David.
"I never saw the child playing whenever he was let out of the house, he had a tight hold on him," she said. "In the beginning, I kind of thought he might be kidnapped."
Divorce paperwork obtained by Fox10 said Sherrill was "unemployed and this has likely impacted his mental state."
Another of Sherrill's neighbours said they were on the scene when David's mother was told that her son was dead.
"I feel horribly for the mother who I witnessed when they told her the news and heard her gut wrenching scream.. that is just something that will stay with me forever," the neighbour said.
