Earthquake shakes wide area of southern Mexico
07 Apr 2011
– A magnitude-6.5 earthquake shook a wide area of southern and central Mexico, sending people fleeing into the streets, but there were no initial reports of damage.
The epicenter was located near the town of Las Choapas, about 370 miles (600 kilometers) southeast of Mexico City, where it swayed buildings for several seconds. In the Gulf coast state of Veracruz, people ran from their homes and school children assembled on playgrounds.
The also was temblor was felt strongly in the state of Chiapas, bordering Guatemala, where there also were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
The U.S. Geological survey said the quake hit a depth of 104 miles (167 kilometers).

An earthquake has shaken the seabed well off Mexico's Pacific coast.
The U.S. Geological Survey says the magnitude-6.5 quake was centered 206 miles (333 kilometers) south-southeast of Cabo San Lucas and 141 miles (227 kilometers) from Socorro Island.
That volcanic island is inhabited by a small Mexican navy detachment and its waters are popular with scuba divers.

There are no reports of damage or injury.
The U.S. National Weather Service's Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has not posted any warning or advisory for the quake, which was centered about 3 miles (5 kilometers) deep.

6.5 earthquake hits Mexico
December 10, 2011
 Depth of 40.3 miles
Many districts in the capital suffered power outages.
3 Dead After Strong Quake Shakes Mexico City and north of Acapulco
A 6.5 / 6.7 magnitude earthquake struck in Mexico's western Guerrero state Saturday night, shaking buildings and causing panic in the nation's capital and the Pacific resort of Acapulco. Officials said at least three people died, but there were no reports of widespread damage.
The U.S. Geological Service initially estimated the quake at magnitude at 6.8, but downgraded it to 6.7 and then 6.5. A quake of that magnitude is capable of causing severe damage, although the depth of this temblor lessened its impact.
depth of 40.3 miles. It was centered about 26 miles southwest of Iguala in Guerrero and 103 miles south-southwest of Mexico City.
Mexico's Interior Department said the quake was felt in parts of nine states.
Humberto Calvo, undersecretary of Guerrero's Civil Protection agency, said three deaths had been reported in the state. He said one man was killed when a house's roof collapsed in Iguala, a second died in the small town of Ixcateopan and the driver of a cargo truck was killed by rocks that fell on the vehicle driving on the toll highway linking Acapulco with Mexico City.
Calvo said a secondary highway between the two cities was blocked in two places by rockslides.

High-rises swayed in the center of Mexico City for more than a minute, and shoppers were temporarily herded out of some shopping centers until the danger passed.
Mexico City's mayor, Marcelo Ebrard, reported by Twitter that no major damage had been reported. He said power failed in some parts of the city.
People in one part of Mexico City's upscale Condesa neighborhood ran out of their houses and gathered in the streets, hugging each other while some shook and began to cry.
Parts of Mexico City rest on the shaky soil of a former lake bed, which tends to magnify the effect of earthquakes. An 8.1-magnitude quake in 1985 killed as many as 10,000 people in the city.

In Acapulco, which is in Guerrero, hundreds of anxious tourists congregated in the street after fleeing rocking buildings that are strung along the coastal boulevard. Patrons also left a movie theater complex.
Authorities said they found no structural damage and had no reports of injuries in the Pacific resort, which was about 87 miles from the quake's epicenter.

6.2 quake hits off coast of southern Mexico
21 Jan 2012
A magnitude-6.2 earthquake that hit off the coast of the southern Mexican state of Chiapas on Saturday shook as far away as El Salvador but brought no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
The quake at 12:47 p.m. local time (1:47 p.m. EST; 18:47 GMT) broke windows in the Chiapas state capital of Tuxtla Gutierrez and sent frightened residents into the streets in numerous cities. It was felt from the Mexican state of Veracruz, through Pacific regions of Guatemala and into El Salvador.

The temblor, which some said felt like waves, also shook the Mexican cities of Comitan and Tapachula, said Jose Manuel Aragon, spokesman for the Chiapas Civil Protection agency.  The U.S. Geological Survey said the epicenter was in the Pacific Ocean about 35 miles (57 kilometers) southwest of the city of Mapastepec, on the coast near the border with Guatemala. It had a depth of 41 miles (66 kilometers.)

"People here wanted to run," said Juan Carlos Hernandez, a restaurant owner in Mapastepec. "Luckily it was nothing bigger than a scare."

MEXICO - 6.0 magnitude earthquake strikes NE Pacific Rise
March 26, 2012 -  A 6.0 magnitude earthquake erupted along a boundary of the Pacific and Cosco tectonic plates at a depth of 9.9 km (6.1 miles) known as the Northeast Pacific Rise. The earthquake erupted after the region was shaken by double 5.0+ foreshocks. The epicenter of the 6.0 earthquake was 862 km (535 miles) SSW of Acapulco, Guerrero, Mexico. The region is still reeling from the effects of the 7.4 earthquake which struck Oaxaca Mexico on March 20. The red squares on the tectonic plate map (above) reflect the  earthquakes that have struck tectonic plate boundaries over the last 24 hours. It is a clear indication that seismic stresses continue to mount along some of these high-risk regions. –The Extinction Protocol

6.3 magnitude earthquake strikes Oaxaca region of Mexico
April 2, 2012  MEXICO
– A powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.3 struck southern Mexico on Monday, the U.S. Geological Survey said. The quake’s epicenter was about 17 miles (27 kilometers) from Ometepec, Guerrero. It was about 7.6 miles (12 kilometers) deep, the USGS said. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. Officials described the quake as an aftershock of the 7.4-magnitude temblor which struck in the same area on March 20, damaging hundreds of homes. There have been 280 aftershocks since that quake, Mexico’s National Seismological Survey reported. Residents felt Monday’s quake in Mexico City, hundreds of miles from the epicenter. There were no initial reports of major damage in the capital, Mayor Marcelo Ebrard said on Twitter. The USGS describes Mexico as one of the most seismically active areas of the world. The country sees an average of seven earthquakes daily with a magnitude greater than 3.0, according to Mexico’s National Seismological Service. -CNN

7.0 earthquake Mexico April 11,  2012
An earthquake of magnitude 7.0 was reported on Mexico's Pacific Coast, following on the heels of a major but lesser quake off the coasts of Oregon.
Mexican earthquake was centered in a sparsely populated area in the mountains of western Mexico but still
caused tall buildings to sway more than 200 miles away in Mexico City.

Wednesday's tremor was the latest in a series of strong shakes to hit Mexico City since a powerful
7.4-magnitude quake hit southern Mexico three weeks ago, but this was not an aftershock of that one.

Nicaragua volcano erupts with ash plume
September 8, 2012
– NICARAGUA – Nicaragua’s tallest volcano belched an ash plume up to 2 1/2 miles (4 km) into the atmosphere on Saturday, prompting the evacuation of hundreds of nearby residents who heard eruptions emanating from its crater. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage, authorities said. The 5,725-foot (1,745-meter) San Cristóbal volcano, located about 95 miles (150 km) north of the capital Managua in the country’s volcano-dotted northwest, has been active in recent years, and stirred in mid-2008, when it expelled gas and rumbled with a series of small eruptions. The government expects to evacuate about 3,000 people from around San Cristobal, though numerous families already have done so on their own, said Guillermo Gonzalez, who heads Sinapred, a government emergency and disaster relief agency. “We already have nearly the entire apparatus underway,” Gonzalez said. “A response plan exists for volcanic eruptions and every community has clearly defined places for people to go to once they are evacuated,” he said. A gas and ash plume stretched between 2 and 2 1/2 miles (3.5 and 4 km) into the atmosphere, Gonzalez said. The Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies, which monitors the country’s volcanoes, said in a preliminary report that “more gas emissions and sporadic explosions” could be expected from San Cristobal. The volcano is one of the most active along Nicaragua’s Pacific coast, according to the institute, and often averages nearly 100 daily seismic movements. Government spokeswoman Rosario Murillo earlier said authorities were still assessing the strength of the volcanic activity. As many as 20,000 people could ultimately be affected, she said. –Euro News

NICARAUGA Telica volcano shaken by new earthquake swarm
June 28, 2013
- A new earthquake swarm started this morning, visible on INETER’s seismograms. Telica has six cones, the tallest of which is 1061 meters high. There is a double crater at the top, 700 meters wide and 120 meters deep. Telica has erupted frequently since the Spanish Era. The most recent eruption was in 2011. In terms of explosive force, Telica’s largest eruption has been rated with a VEI of 4. That eruption occurred in 1529. One of Nicaragua’s most active volcanoes, Telica has erupted frequently, and ash from those frequent eruptions keeps the slopes of its cone bare of vegetation.  –Volcano Discovery, Wikipedia

NICARAUGA  Telica volcano shaken by violent explosion and eruption
September 26, 2013
–  A volcano in Nicaragua has erupted with a mighty blast and a column of ash, then settled down again, the government said. No one was hurt but villagers near the Telica volcano in the northwest of the Central American nation were told to remain on alert. The mountain is about 1000 meters tall. The morning blast spewed ash 50 meters into the air, said Guillermo Gonzalez of the National System for Preventing and Mitigating Disasters. After the single blast, civil defense staff remained on site to gather information. Villagers were put on alert and told to protect their water and food sources.
